Best Multi-Surface Acrylic Paint for Bottle Painting

The best multi-surface acrylic paint and brand for bottle painting in our opinion is…

Multi-Surface Acrylic Paints of Different Brands

I get this question a lot - “which paint is best for bottle painting?”

Acrylic paint is known to be durable and resistant to scratches, however it can vary depending on different factors, such as quality of the paint, surface it is applied on and conditions the painted surface is exposed to.

As live event artists, the FBP team has done many scratch and performance experiments of many different acrylic paints to ensure we deliver the highest quality of results for our clients.

Brands we tested included:

  • Apple Barrel Multi-surface

  • Mondo Llama

  • Crafts smart

  • Folk Art Multi-surface

  • Deco Art Multi-surface

  • Angelus leather paint

  • Apple barrel (regular)

  • Royal & Langnickle

  • Winsor & Newton

The main factors we take into consideration to rate our favourite acrylic paint brands are:

  • Quality – We look at the quality of the paint and compare the texture, consistency and pigmentation. High quality paints will be more vibrant, smoother and more opaque without multiple layering.

  • Price – Best value for money. A more expensive brand may not necessarily mean they have a higher performance rate.

  • Durability – How the paint lasts and stands up to exposure to the elements (scratches, liquid, ice, etc) and other factors such as wear and tear (user handling).

  • Variety – The range of colours, types and finishes that the brand offers. A wider range means less colour mixing!

The two main experiments that were done are the scratch test and water test. As our main surface as live event artists are perfume bottles, the scratch test is important to ensure paint can withstand everyday wear and tear such as use handling or accidental key scratches inside the bag.

Water test is mainly for champagne bottles, where we had to ensure that our paint does not slough off after sitting in an ice bucket of water for a period of time.
